Edinburgh '07

A work of art that can bring tears to the eyes of a twenty-something, Heat-subscribing girlie, a seventy-something, self-made manufacturing mogul and a forty-something media cynic, is seen as a masterpiece and endlessly analysed for the secret of its universality.

Michael McIntyre did exactly that last night – tears of laughter.

And it astounds and infuriates me that he seems to be regarded as too "mainstream" to be worthy of discussion.

Michael McIntyre is a phenomenal comic.

Pure stand up is increasingly rare these days.

Pure stand up is to most of what is in your brochure what classic close up magic is to Penn and Teller.

Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Penn and Teller. As I am of many of the comics up here. But for most there is a theme, a concept that acts as a delivery system for the comedy. They give comedy something to 'do' to show it off.

Michael McIntyre is his own, only delivery system. His comedy doesn't really 'do' anything. Except make you laugh till your face hurts.

I may have got this hopelessly wrong, but isn't that what comedy, at its best, is supposed to do ?

He makes you rock with laughter. Everyone rock with laughter.

For an hour at a time. McIntyre is the ultimate comedic irresistible force and I have never seen the object it cannot move.

He must be one of the least quoted comics around. Because after an hour with this bouncy little man who looks oddly like one of those precocious child actors from Hollywood in the 50s, you don't really remember the material, you simply remember the laughing. It is as if he just reaches in and tickles your mind till it rolls around shrieking with laughter.

McIntyre creates laughs out of nothing and out of everything.

He makes new laughs out of old topics. He wraps his audience in laughter. Michael McIntyre is a comic whose bloodtype is N20. Discuss !

'Michael McIntyre generates most of his material by chatting to the audience. As confident as he is quick-witted, Mcintyre is a boyish, likeable chap who improvises as effortlessly as Eddie Izzard and Ross Noble except with an additional knack for characters and accents. No comedian makes his job look easier. Any producers who are looking for a new TV Presenter should go to his show and bring their chequebooks.' Independent on Sunday
