Steve Gribbin is a diminutive deliverer of paper-cut-sharp musical satire, cunningly disguised as the cuddly guy-next-door.
From his avuncular exterior, you would never guess that Steve harbours a perverse and mischievous desire to prick the bubble of sanctimonious self-satisfaction that surrounds the lives of our politicians, kings, presidents, dictators and vacuous dribbling non-entity celebrities.
Like a Jackson Pollock-style collage of Billy Bragg, Elvis Costello, Bill Bailey, Victoria Wood, Jake Thackray, Steven Patrick Morrissey and Les Dawson, Steve's particular brand of scathing stand-up and meaty musical murderation neatly skewers everyone from The Pope to Pop Idol.
With tunes that are catchier than H5N1 Avian Flu, and lyrics that tip their hat to Ian Dury, Michael Stipe, and Bernard Cribbins, the scabrous Scousers' original comic songs are not the knowing smirk of Oxbridge revues or smug Middle England comedians. They are that rarity... comedy songs that really ARE funny. |
